My wife, Kate, and I laughed when we read the profile of Sheinelle Jones ’00 [“Stepping Into Today”] in the winter 2024 issue. The article about the impressive Jones includes a sidebar that debunks the story that she met her husband, Uche Ojeh ’01, while leading a Northwestern campus tour. But that is precisely how Kate and I met.
After my first year at what is now the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, I spent the summer conducting research for two faculty members and leading tours of the Law School. One day, I walked past the admissions waiting room on the first floor of the Arthur Rubloff Building, and through the glass wall I spotted beautiful Kate, waiting alone for the tour. It was not actually my day to give the tour, but I tracked down that day’s tour guide in the library and convinced him to trade shifts with me.
Kate was the only person on the tour that day. We immediately hit it off, and the conversation between us came easy, though we were complete strangers. Somehow, the one-hour loop through the Law School expanded beyond its usual route. We walked through just about every room and ended well over an hour later than usual.
To my surprise, Kate showed up at the Law School that fall, having walked away from an admission offer at Georgetown Law. I learned later that she only attended the tour that day because she forgot to cancel it and did not want to be rude. Ultimately, the tour changed her mind about Northwestern. We studied together and remained friends after we graduated. We started dating long distance via Amtrak in 1998 — Kate was practicing in New York City, and I was practicing in Washington, D.C. We married in September 1999.
Katarina “Kate” Boer Polozie ’97 JD and Stephen Polozie celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2024.
